Troubleshoot QAT Files
Issues Opening QAT Files
Microsoft Office Not Present
Double-clicking your QAT file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open QAT File". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Office installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your QAT file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: When another QAT application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Incorrect Microsoft Office Version
Your Microsoft Office Quick Access Toolbar File file is incompatible with Microsoft Office because you might have the wrong version installed. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Office installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: If you right-click on your QAT file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening QAT files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Office installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading QAT Files
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Office will resolve your issue. Other QAT opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Invalid QAT file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Corruption of the QAT file description inside the Registry
- Partial installation of Microsoft Office that did not fully complete
- QAT file corruption
- The QAT is infected with a virus
- Device drivers for QAT-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Microsoft Office Quick Access Toolbar File file
