Sources of QBS Problems

Typical QBS Opening Challenges

QuickBASIC Disappeared

When you double-click your QBS file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to QuickBASIC missing in %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: If you don't have QuickBASIC installed, and you know of another program to open your QBS file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Wrong Version of QuickBASIC is Installed

Your Microsoft QuickBasic Program File file is incompatible with QuickBASIC because you might have the wrong version installed. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of QuickBASIC. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your QBS file and clicking "Properties".

Summary: Not having the right QuickBASIC version on your computer can cause problems opening QBS files.

Other QBS File Opening Causes

Even with the correct version of QuickBASIC installed, you can still experience difficulties opening QBSs. If you are still having problems opening QBS files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for QBS are wrong
  • The QBS file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Partial installation of QuickBASIC that did not fully complete
  • Your QBS file is corrupted (issues with your Microsoft QuickBasic Program File file itself)
  • QBS file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • Device drivers for QBS-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Windows cannot load your Microsoft QuickBasic Program File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
