Troubleshooting Problems Opening QDS Files
Troubles Opening QDS Files
Microsoft Windows is Not Installed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open QDS Files" when trying to open your QDS. When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Windows missing in %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the QDS file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your QDS file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Microsoft Windows Requires Update
Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Windows won't support your Windows Directory Query File file. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Windows (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This issue mainly occurs when your Windows Directory Query File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Windows than you have on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the QDS file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Regardless, most of the QDS file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Windows installed.
Other Causes of QDS File Opening Problems
Errors opening Windows Directory Query File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Windows software installed on your computer. Other QDS opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for QDS
- Accidental deletion of the description of the QDS file in the Windows registry
- Invalid installation of a QDS-associated program (eg. Microsoft Windows)
- File corruption affecting your QDS file
- Your QDS has adversely impacted by malware
- Device drivers for QDS-related hardware are out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Windows Directory Query File file successfully
