QPR Troubleshooting

Typical QPR Opening Challenges

Microsoft Visual FoxPro Isn't There

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open QPR Files" when trying to open your QPR. Customarily, this means that Microsoft Visual FoxPro is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your QPR file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your QPR file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Microsoft Visual FoxPro is Out-of-Date

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a FoxPro Generated Query Program file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of QPR file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening QPR files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Other Causes of QPR File Opening Problems

Even with the correct version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed, you can still experience difficulties opening QPRs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening QPR files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • Windows Registry QPR file paths that are incorrect
  • The QPR file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Defective install of a QPR program, such as Microsoft Visual FoxPro
  • Your QPR file is corrupted (issues with your FoxPro Generated Query Program file itself)
  • QPR file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • Hardware associated with QPR has outdated drivers
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your FoxPro Generated Query Program file
