RAT File Complications
Troubles Opening RAT Files
Microsoft Notepad Isn't There
You attempt to load your RAT file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The RAT File Extension". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Notepad missing in %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Notepad installed, and you know of another program to open your RAT file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Incorrect Microsoft Notepad Version
Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Notepad won't support your PICS Rating File file. Download the latest Microsoft Notepad version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your PICS Rating File file was created by a newer Microsoft Notepad than what you have installed.
Tip: Right-clicking on your RAT, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening RAT files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other RAT File Issues
Errors opening PICS Rating File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Notepad software installed on your computer. If you're still experiencing problems opening RAT files, there could be other computer problems. Additional factors include:
- Windows Registry RAT file paths that are incorrect
- Deletion of the RAT file description from the Registry by mistake
- Corrupt install of Microsoft Notepad or other RAT-related program
- RAT file corruption
- RAT file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Drivers associated with RAT software need to be updated
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the PICS Rating File file
