Sources of RBF Problems
Troubles Opening RBF Files
Windows Installer Removed
When you double-click your RBF file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Customarily, this means that Windows Installer is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your RBF file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: Another RBF-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Windows Installer is Out-of-Date
Sometimes your installed version of Windows Installer won't support your Windows Installer Rollback File file. Download the latest Windows Installer version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is predominately due to having a Windows Installer Rollback File file version that was created by a newer version of Windows Installer than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of RBF file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening RBF files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening RBFs
Assuming you have the right Windows Installer version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening RBF files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading RBF files, other external issues might be to blame. Problems unrelated to software:
- RBF file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Unintentional removal of the description of the RBF file inside the Windows Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the RBF format
- Something has caused file corruption of your RBF
- Your RBF has adversely impacted by malware
- Hardware related to RBFs has device driver corruption
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Windows Installer Rollback File file
