RDG Troubleshooting
Typical RDG Opening Challenges
Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Disappeared
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open RDG Files" when trying to open your RDG. If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection installed for %%os%%. The typical path of opening your RDG with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your RDG file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Incorrect Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Version
Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection won't support your Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Manager Configuration file. Download the latest Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Manager Configuration file was created by a newer Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection than what you have installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of RDG file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening RDG files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other RDG File Issues
Assuming you have the right Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening RDG files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading RDG files, other external issues might be to blame. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for RDG
- Accidental deletion of the description of the RDG file in the Windows registry
- Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection or another RDG application experienced a flawed installation
- RDG file corruption
- RDG file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your RDG file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Manager Configuration file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
