Understanding REF Issues

Typical REF Opening Challenges

Missing GDAL

When you double-click your REF file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because GDAL isn't installed on your PC. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: If you don't have GDAL installed, and you know of another program to open your REF file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Wrong Version of GDAL is Installed

Sometimes your installed version of GDAL won't support your IDRISI Raster Image Reference File file. If you do not have the proper version GDAL (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Right-clicking on your REF, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Primarily, problems experienced when opening REF files are due to having the incorrect version of GDAL installed on your computer.

Other Causes of REF File Opening Problems

Assuming you have the right GDAL version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening REF files. Other REF opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Additional factors include:

  • REF file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Corruption of the REF file description inside the Registry
  • Partial installation of GDAL that did not fully complete
  • Your REF can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • The REF is infected with a virus
  • Hardware related to REFs has device driver corruption
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the IDRISI Raster Image Reference File format

Poll: How many different computer files (eg. documents, videos, audio) do you typically view or edit on a daily basis?
