Understanding RESW Issues
Troubles Opening RESW Files
Microsoft Windows 8 is Not Installed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open RESW Files" when trying to open your RESW. When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Windows 8 missing in %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the RESW file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: Another RESW-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Wrong Version of Microsoft Windows 8 is Installed
In other instances, your Microsoft Windows 8 Resources File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Windows 8. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Windows 8 (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This issue mainly occurs when your Microsoft Windows 8 Resources File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Windows 8 than you have on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the RESW file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening RESW files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Additional RESW Opening Issues
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Windows 8 installed, you can still experience difficulties opening RESWs. If you're still experiencing problems opening RESW files, there could be other computer problems. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Invalid RESW file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- The RESW file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a RESW-associated program (eg. Microsoft Windows 8)
- Your RESW file is corrupted (issues with your Microsoft Windows 8 Resources File file itself)
- Malware-tainted RESW file can't be opened
- RESW-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Windows cannot load your Microsoft Windows 8 Resources File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
