Troubleshoot RESX Files
Common RESX Opening Problems
Missing Microsoft Visual Studio
If you attempt to load your RESX file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open RESX Files". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Visual Studio missing in %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your RESX because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: When another RESX application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Outdated Microsoft Visual Studio
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a .NET Managed Resources File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Download the latest Microsoft Visual Studio version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. The primary cause of this problem is that your .NET Managed Resources File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Visual Studio than what's installed.
Tip: Investigate your RESX file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening RESX files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other RESX File Opening Causes
Although you might already have Microsoft Visual Studio or another RESX-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening .NET Managed Resources File files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening RESXs. Issues that aren't software-related:
- RESX file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Unintentional removal of the description of the RESX file inside the Windows Registry
- Corrupt install of Microsoft Visual Studio or other RESX-related program
- Something has caused file corruption of your RESX
- Your RESX is infected with malware
- Drivers associated with RESX software need to be updated
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the .NET Managed Resources File file
