Understanding RGS Issues

Issues Opening RGS Files

Microsoft Visual Studio Disappeared

You attempt to load your RGS file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The RGS File Extension". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Visual Studio is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your RGS file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your RGS file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Microsoft Visual Studio is Out-of-Date

Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Visual Studio won't support your Registry Script file. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Visual Studio (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Most of the time your Registry Script file was created by a newer Microsoft Visual Studio than what you have installed.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the RGS file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Regardless, most of the RGS file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.

Additional RGS Opening Issues

Assuming you have the right Microsoft Visual Studio version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening RGS files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening RGSs. Additional factors include:

  • Windows Registry RGS file paths that are incorrect
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the RGS file in the Windows registry
  • Invalid installation of a RGS-associated program (eg. Microsoft Visual Studio)
  • Something has caused file corruption of your RGS
  • Your RGS is infected with malware
  • Hardware associated with RGS has outdated drivers
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Registry Script file
