Understanding RTP Issues

Common Problems Opening RTP Files

Gromacs Isn't There

When trying to open your RTP file, you get the error "Can't Open RTP File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Gromacs for %%os%% installed on your computer. You won't be able to double-click to open your RTP because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens RTP files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Gromacs is Out-of-Date

Sometimes your installed version of Gromacs won't support your Gromacs Residue Topology Parameter File file. If you do not have the proper version Gromacs (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: If you right-click on your RTP file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Regardless, most of the RTP file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Gromacs installed.

More Causes of Problems Opening RTPs

Assuming you have the right Gromacs version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening RTP files. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening RTP files. Problems unrelated to software:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for RTP are wrong
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry RTP description
  • Gromacs or another RTP application experienced a flawed installation
  • RTP file corruption
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your RTP
  • Drivers associated with RTP software need to be updated
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Gromacs Residue Topology Parameter File files
