RULESET File Complications
Troubles Opening RULESET Files
Missing Microsoft Visual Studio
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open RULESET Files" when trying to open your RULESET. When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Visual Studio missing in %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: Another RULESET-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Outdated Microsoft Visual Studio
Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Visual Studio won't support your Visual Studio Code Analysis Rule Set file. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Visual Studio if you don't have the right version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Visual Studio Code Analysis Rule Set file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Visual Studio than what's installed.
Tip: Investigate your RULESET file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening RULESET files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed on your computer.
Other RULESET File Opening Causes
You can still experience errors opening RULESET files even with the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed on your PC. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening RULESET files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Invalid RULESET file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry RULESET description
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the RULESET format
- Your RULESET can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- RULESET file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers for RULESET-related hardware are out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Visual Studio Code Analysis Rule Set file successfully
