Troubleshoot RX Files

Common RX Opening Problems

Microsoft Windows Not Present

If you attempt to load your RX file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open RX Files". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Windows missing in %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your RX because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your RX, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Microsoft Windows is Out-of-Date

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a MS-DOS 7 Data file that is unsupported by your installed application version. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Windows if you don't have the right version. This problem is predominately due to having a MS-DOS 7 Data file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Windows than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: If you right-click on your RX file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Windows version on your computer can cause problems opening RX files.

Additional RX Opening Issues

Assuming you have the right Microsoft Windows version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening RX files. If you're still experiencing problems opening RX files, there could be other computer problems. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • RX file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry RX description
  • Invalid installation of a RX-associated program (eg. Microsoft Windows)
  • RX file corruption
  • Your RX is infected with malware
  • Drivers associated with RX software need to be updated
  • Windows cannot load your MS-DOS 7 Data file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
