Sources of SCC Problems
Troubles Opening SCC Files
Microsoft Visual Studio Disappeared
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open SCC Files" when trying to open your SCC. If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Visual Studio installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your SCC file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens SCC files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Obsolete Version of Microsoft Visual Studio
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a SourceSafe Source Code Control File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. Most of the time your SourceSafe Source Code Control File file was created by a newer Microsoft Visual Studio than what you have installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the SCC file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Visual Studio version on your computer can cause problems opening SCC files.
Other SCC File Issues
Although you might already have Microsoft Visual Studio or another SCC-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening SourceSafe Source Code Control File files. If you are still having problems opening SCC files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Other contributing causes:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for SCC
- The SCC file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Defective install of a SCC program, such as Microsoft Visual Studio
- Your SCC file is corrupted (issues with your SourceSafe Source Code Control File file itself)
- Your SCC is infected with malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your SCC file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your SourceSafe Source Code Control File file
