SCH File Complications

Issues Opening SCH Files

Autodesk EAGLE Removed

You attempt to load your SCH file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The SCH File Extension". Customarily, this means that Autodesk EAGLE is not installed on %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the SCH file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your SCH file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Obsolete Version of Autodesk EAGLE

Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Autodesk EAGLE installed that's incompatible with your EAGLE Schematics File type. If you do not have the proper version Autodesk EAGLE (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Investigate your SCH file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Conclusion: The majority of SCH file opening issues are due to not having the correct Autodesk EAGLE version installed.

Other Causes of SCH File Opening Problems

Assuming you have the right Autodesk EAGLE version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening SCH files. Other SCH opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Other contributing causes:

  • Invalid SCH file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the SCH file in the Windows registry
  • Partial installation of Autodesk EAGLE that did not fully complete
  • Your SCH can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • The SCH is infected with a virus
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your SCH file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open EAGLE Schematics File files
