SCN Troubleshooting
Troubles Opening SCN Files
Microsoft Age of Empires Isn't There
Double-clicking your SCN file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open SCN File". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Age of Empires for %%os%% installed on your computer. You won't be able to double-click to open your SCN because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your SCN, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Wrong Version of Microsoft Age of Empires is Installed
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Age of Empires installed that's incompatible with your Age Of Mythology Scenario File type. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Age of Empires installed, you'll need to install the correct version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Age Of Mythology Scenario File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Age of Empires than what's installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of SCN file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Conclusion: The majority of SCN file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Age of Empires version installed.
Other SCN File Issues
Assuming you have the right Microsoft Age of Empires version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening SCN files. Other SCN opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Additional factors include:
- Invalid SCN file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Unintentional removal of the description of the SCN file inside the Windows Registry
- Defective install of a SCN program, such as Microsoft Age of Empires
- File corruption affecting your SCN file
- Malware-tainted SCN file can't be opened
- Drivers associated with SCN software need to be updated
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Age Of Mythology Scenario File file successfully
