Understanding SCR Issues
Frequent SCR Opening Issues
Microsoft Windows Removed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open SCR Files" when trying to open your SCR. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Windows for %%os%% installed on your computer. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the SCR file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Windows installed, and you know of another program to open your SCR file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Microsoft Windows is Out-of-Date
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Windows Screensaver File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Windows (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a Windows Screensaver File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Windows than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the SCR file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Windows version on your computer can cause problems opening SCR files.
Other Causes of SCR File Opening Problems
Errors opening Windows Screensaver File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Windows software installed on your computer. If you are still having problems opening SCR files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Issues that aren't software-related:
- SCR file type Registry entries are wrong
- The SCR file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a SCR-associated program (eg. Microsoft Windows)
- Your SCR file is corrupted (issues with your Windows Screensaver File file itself)
- Your SCR is infected with malware
- Hardware related to SCRs has device driver corruption
- Windows cannot load your Windows Screensaver File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
