Sources of SHG Problems
Troubles Opening SHG Files
Missing Microsoft WinHelp
When you double-click your SHG file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft WinHelp missing in %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens SHG files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Obsolete Version of Microsoft WinHelp
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft WinHelp installed that's incompatible with your Segmented Hyper-Graphic type. Download the latest Microsoft WinHelp version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your Segmented Hyper-Graphic file was created by a newer Microsoft WinHelp than what you have installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the SHG file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft WinHelp version on your computer can cause problems opening SHG files.
Other SHG File Opening Causes
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft WinHelp will resolve your issue. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening SHG files. Additional factors include:
- Invalid SHG file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry SHG description
- Microsoft WinHelp or another SHG application experienced a flawed installation
- Something has caused file corruption of your SHG
- Past or present virus infection has affected your SHG
- Hardware related to SHGs has device driver corruption
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Segmented Hyper-Graphic file
