SHS Troubleshooting
Common SHS Opening Problems
Missing Microsoft Excel
If you attempt to load your SHS file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open SHS Files". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Excel for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the SHS file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Excel installed, and you know of another program to open your SHS file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Obsolete Version of Microsoft Excel
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Microsoft Scrap File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Excel. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of SHS file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening SHS files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Excel installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening SHSs
Although you might already have Microsoft Excel or another SHS-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Microsoft Scrap File files. If you're still experiencing problems opening SHS files, there could be other computer problems. Additional factors include:
- SHS file type Registry entries are wrong
- The SHS file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Microsoft Excel or another SHS application experienced a flawed installation
- The SHS itself is corrupted
- SHS file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Hardware related to SHSs has device driver corruption
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Microsoft Scrap File file successfully
