Sources of SQLPROJ Problems
Troubles Opening SQLPROJ Files
Microsoft Visual Studio Removed
If you attempt to load your SQLPROJ file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open SQLPROJ Files". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Visual Studio installed for %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your SQLPROJ with Microsoft Visual Studio, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Visual Studio installed, and you know of another program to open your SQLPROJ file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Outdated Microsoft Visual Studio
In other instances, your Microsoft Visual Studio SQL Server Project file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Visual Studio. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio. Your Microsoft Visual Studio SQL Server Project file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Visual Studio than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your SQLPROJ file and clicking "Properties".
Regardless, most of the SQLPROJ file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.
Other SQLPROJ File Opening Causes
Errors opening Microsoft Visual Studio SQL Server Project files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Visual Studio software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening SQLPROJs. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- SQLPROJ file type Registry entries are wrong
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry SQLPROJ description
- Invalid installation of a SQLPROJ-associated program (eg. Microsoft Visual Studio)
- Your SQLPROJ file is corrupted (issues with your Microsoft Visual Studio SQL Server Project file itself)
- Malware-tainted SQLPROJ file can't be opened
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your SQLPROJ file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Microsoft Visual Studio SQL Server Project file successfully
