SST Troubleshooting
Typical SST Opening Challenges
Missing Certificate Manager Tool
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open SST Files" when trying to open your SST. If so, it typically means that you don't have Certificate Manager Tool installed for %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your SST with Certificate Manager Tool, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you don't have Certificate Manager Tool installed, and you know of another program to open your SST file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Incorrect Certificate Manager Tool Version
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Certificate Manager Tool installed that's incompatible with your Serialized Certificate Store File type. Installing the latest version of Certificate Manager Tool from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your Serialized Certificate Store File file was created by a newer version of Certificate Manager Tool than you have on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your SST file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening SST files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Associated Difficulties Loading SST Files
Although you might already have Certificate Manager Tool or another SST-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Serialized Certificate Store File files. If you're still experiencing problems opening SST files, there could be other computer problems. These issues include:
- SST file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Unintentional removal of the description of the SST file inside the Windows Registry
- Certificate Manager Tool or another SST application experienced a flawed installation
- The SST itself is corrupted
- Malware-tainted SST file can't be opened
- Hardware associated with SST has outdated drivers
- Windows cannot load your Serialized Certificate Store File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
