Understanding SSU Issues
Issues Opening SSU Files
Microsoft Systems Management Server is Not Installed
When trying to open your SSU file, you get the error "Can't Open SSU File Type". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Systems Management Server is not installed on %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your SSU because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens SSU files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Wrong Version of Microsoft Systems Management Server is Installed
Your SMS Hierarchy Manager Site Update file is incompatible with Microsoft Systems Management Server because you might have the wrong version installed. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Systems Management Server installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your SMS Hierarchy Manager Site Update file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Systems Management Server than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Investigate your SSU file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Regardless, most of the SSU file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Systems Management Server installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening SSUs
Assuming you have the right Microsoft Systems Management Server version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening SSU files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading SSU files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- File references in the Windows Registry for SSU are wrong
- Corruption of the SSU file description inside the Registry
- Microsoft Systems Management Server or another SSU application experienced a flawed installation
- File corruption affecting your SSU file
- Past or present virus infection has affected your SSU
- Hardware related to SSUs has device driver corruption
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your SMS Hierarchy Manager Site Update file
