Troubleshoot SYL Files
Issues Opening SYL Files
Microsoft Excel Disappeared
You attempt to load your SYL file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The SYL File Extension". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Excel for %%os%% installed. You won't be able to double-click to open your SYL because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your SYL file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Obsolete Version of Microsoft Excel
Your Symbolic Link Spreadsheet file is incompatible with Microsoft Excel because you might have the wrong version installed. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Excel if you don't have the right version. Your Symbolic Link Spreadsheet file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Excel than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of SYL file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Excel version on your computer can cause problems opening SYL files.
Associated Difficulties Loading SYL Files
Although you might already have Microsoft Excel or another SYL-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Symbolic Link Spreadsheet files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening SYLs. Issues that aren't software-related:
- File references in the Windows Registry for SYL are wrong
- The SYL file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Partial installation of Microsoft Excel that did not fully complete
- File corruption affecting your SYL file
- Your SYL has adversely impacted by malware
- Device drivers for SYL-related hardware are out-of-date
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Symbolic Link Spreadsheet format
