SYLK Troubleshooting
Frequent SYLK Opening Issues
Microsoft Excel Disappeared
When you double-click your SYLK file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Excel installed for %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your SYLK because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens SYLK files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Incorrect Microsoft Excel Version
In other instances, your Microsoft Symbolic Link File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Excel. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Excel from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. The primary cause of this problem is that your Microsoft Symbolic Link File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Excel than what's installed.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your SYLK file and clicking "Properties".
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Excel version on your computer can cause problems opening SYLK files.
More Causes of Problems Opening SYLKs
You can still experience errors opening SYLK files even with the latest version of Microsoft Excel installed on your PC. If you are continuing to have errors with loading SYLK files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- SYLK file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Deletion of the SYLK file description from the Registry by mistake
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the SYLK format
- File corruption affecting your SYLK file
- The SYLK is infected with a virus
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your SYLK file are corrupt or out-of-date
