Sources of SYNC Problems

Issues Opening SYNC Files

Apple OS X Not Present

When you double-click your SYNC file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Apple OS X installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your SYNC file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you don't have Apple OS X installed, and you know of another program to open your SYNC file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Apple OS X is Out-of-Date

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Apple ColorSync File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Apple OS X installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your Apple ColorSync File file was created by a newer version of Apple OS X than you have on your PC.

Tip: If you right-click on your SYNC file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening SYNC files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Other SYNC File Opening Causes

You can still experience errors opening SYNC files even with the latest version of Apple OS X installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening SYNCs. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Windows Registry SYNC file paths that are incorrect
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the SYNC file inside the Windows Registry
  • Apple OS X or another SYNC application experienced a flawed installation
  • The SYNC itself is corrupted
  • Malware-tainted SYNC file can't be opened
  • SYNC-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Apple ColorSync File files

Poll: Do you use a computer or mobile device more often to view files?
