Troubleshooting Problems Opening TRC Files

Frequent TRC Opening Issues

Microsoft SQL Server Not Present

When trying to open your TRC file, you get the error "Can't Open TRC File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft SQL Server for %%os%% installed. Your operating system cannot associate your TRC with Microsoft SQL Server, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your TRC file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Wrong Version of Microsoft SQL Server is Installed

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a SQL Server Trace File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft SQL Server if you don't have the right version. This problem is predominately due to having a SQL Server Trace File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft SQL Server than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of TRC file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening TRC files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Other TRC File Opening Causes

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft SQL Server will resolve your issue. If you're still experiencing problems opening TRC files, there could be other computer problems. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • TRC file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Deletion of the TRC file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Corrupt install of Microsoft SQL Server or other TRC-related program
  • File corruption affecting your TRC file
  • TRC file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • TRC-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the SQL Server Trace File file

Poll: How many different computer files (eg. documents, videos, audio) do you typically view or edit on a daily basis?
