Sources of TTE Problems
Common TTE Opening Problems
Microsoft Private Character Editor Isn't There
You attempt to load your TTE file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The TTE File Extension". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Private Character Editor missing in %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your TTE with Microsoft Private Character Editor, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: Another TTE-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Incorrect Microsoft Private Character Editor Version
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Private Character Editor isn't able to open your Private Character Editor File file due to incompatibility. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Private Character Editor (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your Private Character Editor File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Private Character Editor than what's installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your TTE file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Private Character Editor version on your computer can cause problems opening TTE files.
Other Causes of TTE File Opening Problems
You can still experience errors opening TTE files even with the latest version of Microsoft Private Character Editor installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening TTEs. These issues include:
- Invalid TTE file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry TTE description
- Corrupt install of Microsoft Private Character Editor or other TTE-related program
- Something has caused file corruption of your TTE
- Your TTE has adversely impacted by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your TTE file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Private Character Editor File file successfully
