Troubleshoot ULS Files
Common ULS Opening Problems
Microsoft NetMeeting Not Present
You attempt to load your ULS file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The ULS File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft NetMeeting installed for %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens ULS files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Incorrect Microsoft NetMeeting Version
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a NetMeeting User Location Service File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft NetMeeting installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Most of the time your NetMeeting User Location Service File file was created by a newer Microsoft NetMeeting than what you have installed.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your ULS file and clicking "Properties".
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening ULS files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other ULS File Opening Causes
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft NetMeeting will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening ULS files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Additional factors include:
- Invalid ULS file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Unintentional removal of the description of the ULS file inside the Windows Registry
- Invalid installation of a ULS-associated program (eg. Microsoft NetMeeting)
- File corruption affecting your ULS file
- Malware-tainted ULS file can't be opened
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your ULS file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the NetMeeting User Location Service File format
