Troubleshooting Problems Opening VAC Files
Common Problems Opening VAC Files
Ipswitch IMail Server is Not Installed
When you double-click your VAC file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Ipswitch IMail Server for %%os%% installed. Your operating system cannot associate your VAC with Ipswitch IMail Server, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your VAC, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Outdated Ipswitch IMail Server
It is possible that your version of Ipswitch IMail Server isn't able to open your IMail Server Vacation Message File file due to incompatibility. Visit the Ipswitch, Inc. website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Ipswitch IMail Server. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the VAC file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening VAC files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening VACs
Even with the correct version of Ipswitch IMail Server installed, you can still experience difficulties opening VACs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening VAC files. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Invalid VAC file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- The VAC file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the VAC format
- Your VAC file is corrupted (issues with your IMail Server Vacation Message File file itself)
- VAC file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your VAC file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your IMail Server Vacation Message File file
