VBA File Complications

Typical VBA Opening Challenges

Microsoft Visual Studio Isn't There

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open VBA Files" when trying to open your VBA. Customarily, this means that Microsoft Visual Studio is not installed on %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the VBA file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your VBA, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Microsoft Visual Studio Requires Update

It is possible that your version of Microsoft Visual Studio isn't able to open your Visual Basic For Applications Project file due to incompatibility. Download the latest Microsoft Visual Studio version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your Visual Basic For Applications Project file was created by a newer Microsoft Visual Studio than what you have installed.

Tip: If you right-click on your VBA file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening VBA files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.

Additional VBA Opening Issues

Even with the correct version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed, you can still experience difficulties opening VBAs. If you're still experiencing problems opening VBA files, there could be other computer problems. These issues include:

  • Invalid VBA file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Corruption of the VBA file description inside the Registry
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the VBA format
  • VBA file corruption
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your VBA
  • VBA-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Windows cannot load your Visual Basic For Applications Project file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
