VDW Troubleshooting
Typical VDW Opening Challenges
Microsoft Office Not Present
When trying to open your VDW file, you get the error "Can't Open VDW File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Office for %%os%% installed on your computer. You won't be able to double-click to open your VDW because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: Another VDW-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Microsoft Office Requires Update
In other instances, your Microsoft Visio Web Drawing file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Office. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Office. The primary cause of this problem is that your Microsoft Visio Web Drawing file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Office than what's installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the VDW file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Regardless, most of the VDW file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Office installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening VDWs
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Office installed, you can still experience difficulties opening VDWs. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening VDWs. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for VDW
- Unintentional removal of the description of the VDW file inside the Windows Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the VDW format
- VDW file corruption
- Malware-tainted VDW file can't be opened
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your VDW file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Microsoft Visio Web Drawing file
