Sources of VHDX Problems

Common Problems Opening VHDX Files

Microsoft Windows Server 2016 Not Present

When you double-click your VHDX file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Windows Server 2016 missing in %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your VHDX file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: When another VHDX application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Obsolete Version of Microsoft Windows Server 2016

Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Windows Server 2016 won't support your Windows 8 Virtual Hard Drive File file. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Windows Server 2016 from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. The primary cause of this problem is that your Windows 8 Virtual Hard Drive File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Windows Server 2016 than what's installed.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your VHDX file and clicking "Properties".

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening VHDX files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Windows Server 2016 installed.

Other VHDX File Issues

Errors opening Windows 8 Virtual Hard Drive File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Windows Server 2016 software installed on your computer. If you are continuing to have errors with loading VHDX files, other external issues might be to blame. These issues include:

  • Windows Registry VHDX file paths that are incorrect
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry VHDX description
  • Invalid installation of a VHDX-associated program (eg. Microsoft Windows Server 2016)
  • Your VHDX file is corrupted (issues with your Windows 8 Virtual Hard Drive File file itself)
  • Malware-tainted VHDX file can't be opened
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your VHDX file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Windows 8 Virtual Hard Drive File files
