Understanding VMC Issues
Common Problems Opening VMC Files
VMware Workstation Isn't There
You attempt to load your VMC file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The VMC File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have VMware Workstation installed for %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the VMC file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your VMC file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Outdated VMware Workstation
In other instances, your Windows Virtual Machine Configuration File file version may not be supported by your version of VMware Workstation. Installing the latest version of VMware Workstation from VMware is recommended. Your Windows Virtual Machine Configuration File file was probably created by a newer release of VMware Workstation than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your VMC file and clicking "Properties".
Regardless, most of the VMC file opening problems relate to not having the right version of VMware Workstation installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening VMCs
Even with the correct version of VMware Workstation installed, you can still experience difficulties opening VMCs. Other VMC opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Additional factors include:
- Windows Registry VMC file paths that are incorrect
- Deletion of the VMC file description from the Registry by mistake
- Defective install of a VMC program, such as VMware Workstation
- Your VMC can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Your VMC is infected with malware
- VMC-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Windows Virtual Machine Configuration File file successfully
