Understanding VMM Issues
Common VMM Opening Problems
Missing 3D Movie Maker
You attempt to load your VMM file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The VMM File Extension". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because 3D Movie Maker isn't installed on your PC. The OS won't know what to do with your VMM file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you don't have 3D Movie Maker installed, and you know of another program to open your VMM file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Outdated 3D Movie Maker
Your Microsoft 3D Movie Maker Video File file is incompatible with 3D Movie Maker because you might have the wrong version installed. If you've got the wrong version of 3D Movie Maker installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your Microsoft 3D Movie Maker Video File file was probably created by a newer release of 3D Movie Maker than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of VMM file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening VMM files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other VMM File Issues
You can still experience errors opening VMM files even with the latest version of 3D Movie Maker installed on your PC. Other VMM opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- VMM file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Accidental deletion of the description of the VMM file in the Windows registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the VMM format
- VMM file corruption
- Malware-tainted VMM file can't be opened
- Device drivers for VMM-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Microsoft 3D Movie Maker Video File file
