Troubleshooting Problems Opening VSCT Files
Typical VSCT Opening Challenges
Microsoft Visual Studio Disappeared
Double-clicking your VSCT file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open VSCT File". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Visual Studio is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your VSCT with Microsoft Visual Studio, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Visual Studio installed, and you know of another program to open your VSCT file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Incorrect Microsoft Visual Studio Version
Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Visual Studio won't support your Visual Studio Command Table file. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your Visual Studio Command Table file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Visual Studio than you have on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your VSCT file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Regardless, most of the VSCT file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.
Other VSCT File Issues
You can still experience errors opening VSCT files even with the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed on your PC. If you are still having problems opening VSCT files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for VSCT
- Unintentional removal of the description of the VSCT file inside the Windows Registry
- Partial installation of Microsoft Visual Studio that did not fully complete
- The VSCT itself is corrupted
- Malware-tainted VSCT file can't be opened
- VSCT-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Visual Studio Command Table file successfully
