VSDM Troubleshooting
Common VSDM Opening Problems
Microsoft Visio is Not Installed
When trying to open your VSDM file, you get the error "Can't Open VSDM File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Visio for %%os%% installed. Your operating system cannot associate your VSDM with Microsoft Visio, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Visio installed, and you know of another program to open your VSDM file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Incorrect Microsoft Visio Version
In other instances, your Microsoft Visio 2013 Macro-Enabled Drawing Data file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Visio. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Visio installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Right-clicking on your VSDM, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Visio version on your computer can cause problems opening VSDM files.
Additional VSDM Opening Issues
Assuming you have the right Microsoft Visio version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening VSDM files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading VSDM files, other external issues might be to blame. Additional factors include:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for VSDM
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry VSDM description
- Microsoft Visio or another VSDM application experienced a flawed installation
- VSDM file corruption
- Past or present virus infection has affected your VSDM
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your VSDM file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Microsoft Visio 2013 Macro-Enabled Drawing Data file
