Troubleshoot VSMDI Files
Frequent VSMDI Opening Issues
Microsoft Visual Studio Isn't There
When trying to open your VSMDI file, you get the error "Can't Open VSMDI File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Visual Studio isn't installed on your PC. The OS won't know what to do with your VSMDI file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Visual Studio installed, and you know of another program to open your VSMDI file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Wrong Version of Microsoft Visual Studio is Installed
Your Microsoft Visual Studio Test Metadata file is incompatible with Microsoft Visual Studio because you might have the wrong version installed. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Visual Studio if you don't have the right version. This issue mainly occurs when your Microsoft Visual Studio Test Metadata file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Visual Studio than you have on your PC.
Tip: Right-clicking on your VSMDI, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening VSMDI files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Associated Difficulties Loading VSMDI Files
Assuming you have the right Microsoft Visual Studio version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening VSMDI files. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening VSMDI files. Issues that aren't software-related:
- VSMDI file type Registry entries are wrong
- The VSMDI file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Defective install of a VSMDI program, such as Microsoft Visual Studio
- Something has caused file corruption of your VSMDI
- VSMDI file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Hardware associated with VSMDI has outdated drivers
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Microsoft Visual Studio Test Metadata file
