Troubleshooting Problems Opening VSPS Files
Typical VSPS Opening Challenges
Microsoft Visual Studio Isn't There
When you double-click your VSPS file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Visual Studio for %%os%% installed on your computer. Your operating system cannot associate your VSPS with Microsoft Visual Studio, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your VSPS, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Incorrect Microsoft Visual Studio Version
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Visual Studio Serialized Performance file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Most of the time your Visual Studio Serialized Performance file was created by a newer Microsoft Visual Studio than what you have installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your VSPS file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening VSPS files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening VSPSs
Assuming you have the right Microsoft Visual Studio version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening VSPS files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening VSPSs. Problems unrelated to software:
- Windows Registry VSPS file paths that are incorrect
- Corruption of the VSPS file description inside the Registry
- Defective install of a VSPS program, such as Microsoft Visual Studio
- The VSPS itself is corrupted
- Your VSPS has adversely impacted by malware
- Drivers associated with VSPS software need to be updated
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Visual Studio Serialized Performance file successfully
