Troubleshoot VSTM Files
Typical VSTM Opening Challenges
Microsoft Office Not Present
You attempt to load your VSTM file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The VSTM File Extension". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Office for %%os%% installed. Your operating system cannot associate your VSTM with Microsoft Office, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Office installed, and you know of another program to open your VSTM file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Microsoft Office is Out-of-Date
In other instances, your Microsoft Visio 2013 Macro-enabled Template File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Office. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Office (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your Microsoft Visio 2013 Macro-enabled Template File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Office than what's installed.
Tip: Right-clicking on your VSTM, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening VSTM files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other VSTM File Issues
Errors opening Microsoft Visio 2013 Macro-enabled Template File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Office software installed on your computer. If you are continuing to have errors with loading VSTM files, other external issues might be to blame. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Invalid VSTM file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Accidental deletion of the description of the VSTM file in the Windows registry
- Corrupt install of Microsoft Office or other VSTM-related program
- File corruption affecting your VSTM file
- Your VSTM is infected with malware
- Drivers associated with VSTM software need to be updated
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Microsoft Visio 2013 Macro-enabled Template File file
