Troubleshoot VXD Files
Troubles Opening VXD Files
Microsoft Windows Removed
When you double-click your VXD file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Windows installed for %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your VXD, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Obsolete Version of Microsoft Windows
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Windows Virtual Device Driver file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Download the latest Microsoft Windows version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is predominately due to having a Windows Virtual Device Driver file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Windows than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the VXD file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Windows version on your computer can cause problems opening VXD files.
More Causes of Problems Opening VXDs
Errors opening Windows Virtual Device Driver files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Windows software installed on your computer. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening VXD files. Problems unrelated to software:
- VXD file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Unintentional removal of the description of the VXD file inside the Windows Registry
- Invalid installation of a VXD-associated program (eg. Microsoft Windows)
- File corruption affecting your VXD file
- Your VXD is infected with malware
- Device drivers for VXD-related hardware are out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Windows Virtual Device Driver file
