W31 Troubleshooting
Troubles Opening W31 Files
Missing Microsoft Windows 3.x
When trying to open your W31 file, you get the error "Can't Open W31 File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Windows 3.x missing in %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your W31 file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Incorrect Microsoft Windows 3.x Version
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Windows 3.1 Startup Data file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Windows 3.x from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of W31 file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening W31 files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Windows 3.x installed.
Other W31 File Opening Causes
Assuming you have the right Microsoft Windows 3.x version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening W31 files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading W31 files, other external issues might be to blame. Issues that aren't software-related:
- W31 file type Registry entries are wrong
- Deletion of the W31 file description from the Registry by mistake
- Partial installation of Microsoft Windows 3.x that did not fully complete
- Your W31 file is corrupted (issues with your Windows 3.1 Startup Data file itself)
- Your W31 is infected with malware
- Hardware related to W31s has device driver corruption
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Windows 3.1 Startup Data file
