W32 File Summary

The W32 File Extension has two different file types (mostly seen as the Win32 Makefile format) and can be opened with two distinctive software programs, with the dominant related application developed by GNU Operating System (GNU Make software). The majority of W32 files are considered Developer Files, but they can also be Video Files.

Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems can be used to view W32 files. Both desktop and mobile devices enable you to view and (sometimes) edit these files, depending on the software used. These files have a Popularity Rating of "Low", meaning they are not very commonly observed on your average hard disk.

W32 File Complications

Frequent W32 Opening Issues

Missing GNU Make

Double-clicking your W32 file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open W32 File". When this happens, it is commonly due to GNU Make missing in %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your W32 file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you don't have GNU Make installed, and you know of another program to open your W32 file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

GNU Make Requires Update

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Win32 Makefile file that is unsupported by your installed application version. You will need to download a newer version of GNU Make if you don't have the right version. This problem is predominately due to having a Win32 Makefile file version that was created by a newer version of GNU Make than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Right-clicking on your W32, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening W32 files are due to having the wrong version of GNU Make installed.

Associated Difficulties Loading W32 Files

You can still experience errors opening W32 files even with the latest version of GNU Make installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening W32s. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for W32
  • Deletion of the W32 file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the W32 format
  • Your W32 can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your W32
  • Device drivers for W32-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your Win32 Makefile file
