Sources of W40 Problems
Common Problems Opening W40 Files
Microsoft Windows Isn't There
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open W40 Files" when trying to open your W40. When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Windows missing in %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your W40 with Microsoft Windows, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens W40 files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Incorrect Microsoft Windows Version
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Windows isn't able to open your Windows 95 Backup File file due to incompatibility. Download the latest Microsoft Windows version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Right-clicking on your W40, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening W40 files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other W40 File Issues
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Windows installed, you can still experience difficulties opening W40s. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening W40 files. Additional factors include:
- W40 file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Deletion of the W40 file description from the Registry by mistake
- Defective install of a W40 program, such as Microsoft Windows
- W40 file corruption
- Past or present virus infection has affected your W40
- Hardware related to W40s has device driver corruption
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Windows 95 Backup File files
