WAB Troubleshooting
Troubles Opening WAB Files
Microsoft Outlook Express Removed
Double-clicking your WAB file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open WAB File". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Outlook Express installed for %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens WAB files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Microsoft Outlook Express is Out-of-Date
Your Windows Address Book file is incompatible with Microsoft Outlook Express because you might have the wrong version installed. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Outlook Express from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. Your Windows Address Book file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Outlook Express than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your WAB file and clicking "Properties".
Conclusion: The majority of WAB file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Outlook Express version installed.
Other WAB File Opening Causes
Assuming you have the right Microsoft Outlook Express version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening WAB files. If you are still having problems opening WAB files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These issues include:
- Invalid WAB file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry WAB description
- Invalid installation of a WAB-associated program (eg. Microsoft Outlook Express)
- Your WAB can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your WAB
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your WAB file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Windows Address Book file successfully
