Troubles Opening WCF Files

Missing Microsoft Notepad

When trying to open your WCF file, you get the error "Can't Open WCF File Type". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Notepad is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your WCF with Microsoft Notepad, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your WCF, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Microsoft Notepad is Out-of-Date

In other instances, your WebEx Saved Chat Session file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Notepad. Download the latest Microsoft Notepad version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Your WebEx Saved Chat Session file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Notepad than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Investigate your WCF file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Regardless, most of the WCF file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Notepad installed.

Other Causes of WCF File Opening Problems

You can still experience errors opening WCF files even with the latest version of Microsoft Notepad installed on your PC. If you are still having problems opening WCF files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:

• Windows Registry WCF file paths that are incorrect
• Mistaken removal of the Windows registry WCF description
• Invalid installation of a WCF-associated program (eg. Microsoft Notepad)
• WCF file corruption
• Past or present virus infection has affected your WCF
• Device drivers of the hardware associated with your WCF file are corrupt or out-of-date
• Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the WebEx Saved Chat Session file
