Sources of WCRY Problems
Common WCRY Opening Problems
Missing System Restore
You attempt to load your WCRY file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The WCRY File Extension". When this happens, it is commonly due to System Restore missing in %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your WCRY file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your WCRY file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Wrong Version of System Restore is Installed
In other instances, your WannaCry Virus Encrypted File file version may not be supported by your version of System Restore. If you do not have the proper version System Restore (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a WannaCry Virus Encrypted File file version that was created by a newer version of System Restore than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of WCRY file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: Not having the right System Restore version on your computer can cause problems opening WCRY files.
More Causes of Problems Opening WCRYs
Even with the correct version of System Restore installed, you can still experience difficulties opening WCRYs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening WCRY files. Other contributing causes:
- WCRY file type Registry entries are wrong
- Accidental deletion of the description of the WCRY file in the Windows registry
- System Restore or another WCRY application experienced a flawed installation
- Your WCRY file is corrupted (issues with your WannaCry Virus Encrypted File file itself)
- Malware-tainted WCRY file can't be opened
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your WCRY file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the WannaCry Virus Encrypted File file
