Understanding WLMP Issues
Issues Opening WLMP Files
Microsoft Windows Live Movie Maker is Not Installed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open WLMP Files" when trying to open your WLMP. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Windows Live Movie Maker for %%os%% installed on your computer. Your operating system cannot associate your WLMP with Microsoft Windows Live Movie Maker, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When another WLMP application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Outdated Microsoft Windows Live Movie Maker
In other instances, your Microsoft Windows Live Movie Maker Video Project file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Windows Live Movie Maker. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Windows Live Movie Maker. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your WLMP file and clicking "Properties".
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening WLMP files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening WLMPs
Assuming you have the right Microsoft Windows Live Movie Maker version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening WLMP files. Other WLMP opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These issues include:
- Invalid WLMP file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Unintentional removal of the description of the WLMP file inside the Windows Registry
- Microsoft Windows Live Movie Maker or another WLMP application experienced a flawed installation
- Something has caused file corruption of your WLMP
- Past or present virus infection has affected your WLMP
- Hardware related to WLMPs has device driver corruption
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Microsoft Windows Live Movie Maker Video Project format
