WMDB File Complications

Troubles Opening WMDB Files

Microsoft Windows Media Player Removed

Double-clicking your WMDB file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open WMDB File". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Windows Media Player for %%os%% installed on your computer. The typical path of opening your WMDB with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens WMDB files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Microsoft Windows Media Player Requires Update

In other instances, your Windows Media Database File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Windows Media Player. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Windows Media Player (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Your Windows Media Database File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Windows Media Player than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the WMDB file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Primarily, problems experienced when opening WMDB files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Windows Media Player installed on your computer.

Other WMDB File Opening Causes

Errors opening Windows Media Database File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Windows Media Player software installed on your computer. Other WMDB opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • Invalid WMDB file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Deletion of the WMDB file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Partial installation of Microsoft Windows Media Player that did not fully complete
  • Your WMDB can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Malware-tainted WMDB file can't be opened
  • Device drivers for WMDB-related hardware are out-of-date
