WPT Troubleshooting
Common Problems Opening WPT Files
Corel WordPerfect X8 Disappeared
When trying to open your WPT file, you get the error "Can't Open WPT File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Corel WordPerfect X8 for %%os%% installed on your computer. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you don't have Corel WordPerfect X8 installed, and you know of another program to open your WPT file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Corel WordPerfect X8 Requires Update
In other instances, your WordPerfect Template file version may not be supported by your version of Corel WordPerfect X8. If you've got the wrong version of Corel WordPerfect X8 installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your WordPerfect Template file was probably created by a newer release of Corel WordPerfect X8 than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your WPT file and clicking "Properties".
Regardless, most of the WPT file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Corel WordPerfect X8 installed.
Other WPT File Opening Causes
Assuming you have the right Corel WordPerfect X8 version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening WPT files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening WPTs. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Invalid WPT file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Accidental deletion of the description of the WPT file in the Windows registry
- Defective install of a WPT program, such as Corel WordPerfect X8
- File corruption affecting your WPT file
- WPT file integrity has been compromised by malware
- WPT-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open WordPerfect Template files
